ELK Studios’ Hit It Big Reviewed

Like the “This is Fine” meme, Hit It Big is an online slot game in which the player must be calm while being bombarded by a barrage of maniacally intense neon blocks that, at first, make no sense at all.

Hit It Big is essentially a highly risky slot with a retro gameshow theme, created by the Swedish developer ELK Studios. The game is played on a standard 5×3 reel set with 5 paylines and a set of Feature Buttons that activate in tandem with the reels. The highlight of this package is the Hit It Big Bonus game, a picking bonus with three progressive levels and payouts of up to a thousand times your initial bet.

As expected from a slot in ELK’s classic series, the game’s aesthetic brings to mind other classic ELK games like Ivanhoe and Route 777. It’s set in a TV studio, so when you leave it idle, you’ll hear the studio audience coughing and chatting, but the mesmerizing sound of the reels will drown them out. Hit It Big is a riot of color and the background neon lights give it a ’80s vibe. There are three separate low-paying Bar symbols, four lucky sevens with increasing values, and a crowned lucky seven that pays you 50 times your bet for five in a row.

Wild (represented by the gold crown) substitutes for all other symbols (save the scatter) in the game.

The Big One (ELK Studios): Featuring Hit It

The Reel Game feature is the focal point of the primary game. There are a number of neon-colored feature buttons located both above and below the reel set, each of which displays a different feature that will provide you with new possible combinations with each spin. When the buttons on the bottom and upper sets line up, the corresponding function is activated and shown on the jumbotron above the reels. However rare to happen, this manner it’s possible to land up to 5 features in one spin. The available options are as follows:

Locked Wilds – locks stacked wilds on the first and fifth reels for 3 respin cycles.

For the current spin, all positions on an entire reel are filled with wild symbols.

The “Respin” button causes the reels to restart.

Awards a multiplier for the associated payline, ranging from 2x to 50x the normal payout.

Get three scatters anywhere on the middle reels to unlock the Bonus Game and increase your chances of winning big. A selection marker will move randomly over multiple stake multipliers, which are depicted by fictitious prizes like roller skates, motorbikes, and yachts, and you’ll need to press the stop button whenever it lands on one of these fictitious items to win the corresponding stake multiplier. If the marker lands on a Bandit sign during one of the subsequent choices after a win, the bonus round is over.

Additionally, there is an arrow set that points both outward and inward. If you get the inward arrow, you’ll advance to the next level and be eligible for more money. However, if you choose the arrow pointing outwards, you will be demoted. One spin now awards a guaranteed monetary payout of 100x, 200x, 300x, 500x, or 1000x, depending on the player’s level.

Judgment: Hit It Big (ELK Studios)

The maximum payout in Hit It Big is just 2500 times your initial bet, which is laughably low given the game’s audacious claim in the title. This is a very volatile slot with a bonus frequency of 1 in 248 spins, indicating it requires considerable risk for a relatively modest payout if you compare it to what’s currently trending on the market. It’s not easy to get the bonus, and the game will devour you if the Reel Game features don’t save you (which they never did for us). Actually, those feature buttons are quite similar to the polarity of magnets.

However, Hit It Big has an undeniable appeal that defies easy explanation. The design isn’t particularly complex, but it manages to resonate with us deeply psychologically. It’s very appealing, and it immediately makes you want to gamble. Though we’re usually not lovers of choosing bonuses, we have to admit that the implementation in Hit It Big is rather good, with the inner and outer arrows helping to give it a bit more complexity and contingency.

Hit It Big is a fun slot machine with a thrilling bonus, but we think it would have been much better if the maximum payout were at least 5000x.
